NHS Lothian, Borders and Fife healthcare professionals involved in the care of people with cancer can directly order genetic testing for their eligible patients.
The key aim of ‘mainstreaming’ cancer genetic testing is to streamline genetic testing into the cancer patient pathway.
These genetic tests can sometimes inform healthcare decisions for people with cancer. The tests can also provide information which may be useful to their relatives and enable them to access appropriate healthcare.
Healthcare professionals can make use of the following training resources to support their own competency development. In some specialities, mainstreaming cancer genetic testing has been ongoing for many years and therefore undertaking training is not a prerequisite for ordering tests. However, these resources may still be useful.
